MMA Composition Day

City of London School for girls will host the MMA Composition Day 2017. A day of composition workshops providing invaluable experience for young composers to experiment and discuss ideas with leading practitioners. With two categories (Junior ages 12-14, Senior ages 15-18) the day will be full of tips and ideas as to how to respond to composition briefs such as art and stories, use improvisation as a vehicle for composition, write successfully for instruments and achieve highly at public exam level.

Speaker at MMA Composition Day - London

This day will include a workshop on compositional techniques, in addition to a lecture on general composition. There will be a workshop performance of the three winning compositions that have been chosen by the adjudicator who will also give guidance and host a Q&A session for anyone who would like to bring along their compositions for advice. Structured in a similar way to an ‘INSET on composition’, the day will focus on our students, bringing them together and reminding them that they are not alone!

A new course devised and delivered by Steven. This course starts with the end in mind: how do you get a class to compose high scoring compositions when faced with a mixed ability range of students, including non-readers, non-classical and classical composers? The course will show how you can get away from formulaic teaching and help students be creative and imaginative in their compositions. It will explore in detail particular forms, styles and genres most used at GCSE level and show how to create pieces that are coherent, develop ideas and show ambition in the exploitation of the various musical elements.

Steven will sing three items as part of a New Members Concert for the Oxford and Cambridge Musical Club. The concert starts 7 pm at UCL (Hausmann Room). Programme includes 'Love in her eyes sits playing' (Handel), 'Un'aura amorosa' (Mozart) and Lenski's aria from Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky).
